Keeping Your Pond In Check With A Check Valve

One thing we frequently encounter, when we work with people who are looking for support with their pond, is the lack of a check valve. A check valve is an invaluable tool in keeping your pond functioning correctly and making cleanouts a breeze!

What does it do?

A check valve helps to push the flow of water in a single direction. Another function is to prevent back flow from returning to the water feature when the power is out, or when you shut the pump off.

How does it work?

A check valve attaches directly to the pump and fits neatly inside the skimmer box of your pond. Inside the valve itself is a rubber stopper that regulates the flow of water. The force of the water pushes the stopper up and out of the way during normal use. When the power goes out or is turned off, the stopper drops and seals so that water is held inside the plumbing until it is once again turned on.

Why do I need one?

Check valves are something pond owners will definitely want to invest in. Let’s explore some of the benefits below:

• You need to keep water in your biological filter so that all the beneficial bacteria continues to thrive. Major shifts in your beneficial bacteria throw off the ecosystem which can cause the growth of algae. A check valve will keep the water in your biological filter.

• A check valve prevents excess water from flooding the area around your pond in the event of a power outage.

• It also protects your pump from damage that can occur with back flow flooding the pump.
